In an attempt to reduce the amount of non-recyclable rubbish, primary schools around Australia have started implementing a Nude Food Day. Kids are encouraged to help mum/dad pack their lunch boxes with the least amount of wrapping/packaging possible.

This is actually more difficult than it sounds. No sandwich bags, no muesli bar wrappers, no cheese stick wrappers. I found the trick was baking paper – you know, the greaseproof paper you put between a baking tray and food in the oven? It’s a perfect solution for wrapping sandwiches , cheese and anything in a lunch box. The other trick is to have lots of reusable containers in all different sizes.

Some schools have a trophy – our local school had one in the shape of a bin – the class with the least wrappers, is awarded with a fruit platter to share plus the Nude Food Trophy.

For teachers, here’s a ‘lesson plan

Think about the amount of rubbish being thrown out at your office each day. Could you run a Nude Food Day at work? Let us know how it goes!
